Jazz in Martinborough
This year’s theme is Women in Jazz, to celebrate New Zealand’s world-leading granting of women the right to vote in 1893. We are going to showcase some great female performers in all our main acts to honour this legacy:
Noir (Thursday 30 August)
Miho’s Jazz Orchestra (Friday 31 August)
Rodger Fox FunkBone Experience with Erna Ferry (Saturday 1 September)
The opening night of the festival on will feature the stylish Mary Watson and Noir, who have drawn big crowds to Peppers Parehua during previous JIM festivals. We are delighted to showcase Mary’s singing talents for a wider festival audience, and this year Mary has assembled a great band of super musicians who play a wide range of jazz with ease and style.
Miho’s Jazz Orchestra on Friday evening will be one to remember, as they always bring fabulous excitement and energy to their performances. Miho is a jazz flautist and her group has been together since 2011 and has released several albums, including one earlier this year.
The headliner gig on Saturday sees the return of our Patron and New Zealand Jazz legend Rodger Fox, this time with the FunkBone Experience featuring three talented female artists, Erny Ferry (vocals), Eilish Wilson (saxophone) and Lauren Ellis (drums). They wield smoky licks, classic funk, down-home blues and remakes of classic jazz standards with a repertoire that reads likes a who’s who of funk jazz.
