Sunday Lunch at Tirohana Estate Martinborough

Tirohana Estate - Grand Sunday Roast

In Martinborough we are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants, fine wine, delectable cuisine, vineyards, olive groves, stunning venues & vistas...........we rarely leave town for this reason.

A favourite venue is most definitely the beautiful Tirohana Estate on Puruatanga Road. One of our oldest established wineries, Tirohana boasts a Colonial style tasting room, fine dining restaurant, a quaint secretly tucked away emporium & beautiful grounds - this Sunday we decided to check out the famous Tirohana "Grand Sunday Roast". In true MV style - "we decided to blog it", our aim to bring to you the best of the best Martinborough Village has to offer.

We are telling you, Tirohana is the whole package, this venue is quite simply beautiful, like stepping into another time, totally inviting, warm open fire, sumptuous menu, award winning wines, relaxing music creating an ambient vibe & genuine friendly service from the well known & much loved Toby, we feel as though we are home with friends.....this experience is what you call beyond perfection...& we've only just arrived.

Dining at Tirohana Estate

Tirohana Estate is a must visit when in Martinborough Village. We are so fortunate to have quality dining venues like this available right on our back doorstep - no need to leave town, living in Martinborough is like being on a never-ending holiday.

The winter menu at Tirohana is not to be missed - on arrival the restaurant fire was roaring, we were warmly welcomed by Toby & team. Weary travelers in from the cold to a virtual haven of gorgeous decor, relaxing music... and that open fire to gaze at while we sipped our fine Tirohana Estate Pinot Noir. Our choice today was Pinot Leslie Reserve 2014, "The easy drinker" Toby tells us, rich with fruit notes of Doris Plum, toffee and vanilla....one glass is never enough!

One of the highlights of Tirohana's winter menu is the Grand Sunday Roast, this was our choice today, let us take you through the menu course by course.

Entree - Salad of feta, with orange, pine nuts & balsamic (gf)

Divine, refreshing, loved the citrus flavour burst - a perfect contrast to the salty feta with the crunch of roasted pine nuts to top it all off....a perfect start to our 3 course Grand Sunday Roast!

*2nd menu option was Soup of the moment with estate bread (gf)

Main - Roasted Sirloin of Red Devon Beef (gf)

The main event! A perfectly roasted sirloin of Red Devon Beef with "melt in your mouth" Yorkshire pudding, on a bed of mash with broad beans, red cabbage, carrots & horseradish sauce. So, so divine we urge you to try this soon, every mouthful sensational, this was a truly superb roast meal.....fit for a King!
(or two local Princesses as was the case today!)

*2nd menu option Fish of the Day en papillote with lemon, butter & red onion (gf)
*vegetarian option also available

Dessert - Sunday Sundae - Vanilla Ice-Cream with Salted Caramel

Heaven in a glass, this Sunday Sundae - the stunning 3rd course - absolutely divine. A range of toppings to choose from, we went for the salted caramel & believe us it was to die for. Sumptuous layers of caramel, ice-cream & cream. The crunchy salted caramel in contrast to the smooth velvet creamy dessert... there are no more words, just go try it.

*2nd option sticky date pudding, caramel sauce, vanilla ice-cream

Tirohana Estate's stunning grounds

Until Next Time.......

Espresso coffee to end the meal, still glowing by the fire, feeling relaxed, well taken care of it's time to head home. Before we leave there's an obligatory stop at the delightful emporium where Estate chutneys, sauces & a range of wares are set to tempt you, a last taste of wine at the cellar door, chat to Toby & team, walk around the beautiful grounds... we're reluctant to say goodbye, but as we know all good things must come to an end... on the upside, we know we'll soon be back!

Winter at Tirohana is amazing, there's the mid winter Christmas lunch & dinner coming up on June 20th & 21st, Bastille Day dinner ("Allo, 'Allo!) on July 14th, The Roaring Twenties dinner on August 7th (we heard this was well attended by locals last year with some incredible costumes!) & A Taste of Asia dinner August 21st.

Our take home message....if you haven't experienced Tirohana, you haven't fully experienced Martinborough, so make sure you book soon. This experience is one of the highest ranking on our #MVmustdo list

"We wish to extend our thanks to Toby & the Tirohana Estate team for the warm welcome, exceptional cuisine & incredible service"
