Midwinter in Martinborough

Midwinter in Martinborough Village

This weekend was a busy one in Martinborough Village, with the Midwinter affair night market, olive harvest time & lots happening around the town, we ventured out to enjoy the festival atmosphere.

Here we share a few of our adventures, focusing on our local olive producers & a special wine tasting event!

A range of local Olive Oils at Martinborough Wine Merchants

Martinborough is known for it's beautiful olive oils, you will find a full range of local olive producers oils available at Martinborough wine merchants. They often hold tastings in the shop, so look out for these, a chance to discuss the science behind growing olives & producing oils.... so interesting, we also love the opportunity to sample this good oil.

A Midwinter Affair

Held on Saturday evening in Martinborough's beautiful Memorial Square the Midwinter Affair night market was a huge success.

This is an annual event we absolutely adore! Special, unique...totally irresistible, we are already looking forward to next year. The charm of a midwinter market is hard to beat, the town was humming with people, the atmosphere incredibly warm despite the cold. Frost pots positioned around the square warding off the winter chill, mulled wine to warm your heart, fairy lights providing a magical midwinter shimmer, delicious food, beautiful gift wares, music, oils, street food, cafes & restaurants providing havens from the cold.

This type of event is where you will truly see Martinborough at it's best, the focal point of the town square is what identifies this village as a "must visit" destination.

Wine tasting with Paul Mason at Martinborough Vineyard

On Saturday afternoon we headed down to Martinborough Vineyard for a vertical wine tasting with wine maker Paul Mason showcasing 5 limited edition Pinot Noir dating back to 2003.

We totally enjoyed chatting with Paul & the wine was incredible - Martinborough is known for producing some of the best Pinot in the country. Paul has such a wealth of knowledge, we were particularly impressed at his ability to recall the weather patterns at the time of each vintage & the impact on the wine, re-living the seasons memories with each sip.

A pleasant way to spend a weekend afternoon in one of Martinborough's oldest established wineries.

Olive Grove visit

On Sunday we headed off to Molive for a visit to their picturesque grove. Pictured below is Joy Cooper who runs the grove with husband Mike. Molive is another Martinborough grove which produces incredibly good award winning oil & is a pleasure to visit. We walked through the olive grove, had a go at picking some olives & enjoyed beautiful views of the Tararuas on a sunny winters day. Molive work in with neighbouring groves Atutahi & Left Field, which gives a unique aspect to the grove experience. We got to walk through all three properties, taste the oils, chat about olive growing & see another behind the scenes view of our local producers in Martinborough Village. A truly exceptional experience, how lucky we are to have this on our back doorstep, so accessible.
